Technical Support for Windows 2000

Technical Support for the Windows 2000 Operating System covers many different areas. To fully configure your computer for the ResNet service follow all the steps listed below. If you have any difficulties please follow our support process to contact an RCC.

Resetting your network identification

  1. Right-click My Computer
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click the Network Identification tab
  4. Click Properties
  5. Under Computer Name, type your ULID (University ID). Your University ID is the same as the first part of your Illinois State University e-mail address. Example: ulid@ilstu.edu.
  6. Select the option Workgroup and type ADILSTU
  7. Click OK. You will receive a message saying, "Welcome to the ADILSTU  workgroup." Click OK
  8. You will receive another message stating that you have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Click OK
  9. When your computer prompts you if you want to restart your computer, click NO

Opening and Installing your Network Connection

  1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
  2. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties. If you do not have a Local Area Connection icon in your Network and Dial-up Connections, your network card is not properly installed.
  4. If Client for Microsoft Networks is not on your list of components:
    • Click Install
    • Select Client and click Add
    • Select Client for Microsoft Networks and click OK
  5. If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not on your list of components:
    • Click Install
    • Select Protocol and click Add
    • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click OK

Configuring Your IP and DNS Settings

  1. To configure TCP/IP to use ResNet, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties
  2. Select the options Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically
  3. Click Advanced

Configuring Your IP Settings

  1. If there are any entries under Default gateways, select them and click Remove
  2. Click the DNS tab

Configuring Your DNS Settings

  1. If there are any entries under DNS server addresses, select each of them and click Remove
  2. Make sure the checkbox for Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix is unchecked
  3. Make sure the checkbox for Register this connection's addresses in DNS is unchecked
  4. Click the WINS tab

Configuring Your WINS Settings

  1. If there are any entries under WINS addresses, select each of them and click Remove
  2. Select the option Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

  1. Click OK twice
  2. You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD depending on the options you have selected. Once your computer has finished copying files the necessary files, you will be prompted to reboot your computer. Once you reboot, your computer will then be properly configured to use ResNet.
