Technical Support for Long Range Ethernet (LRE)

Technical Support for the Long Range Ethernet (LRE) covers many different areas. To fully configure your computer for the ResNet service follow all the steps listed below. If you have any difficulties please follow our support process to contact an RCC.

Required Parts

ResNet Parts Provided
  1. LRE Modem with bubble-wrap and cardboard box
  2. Power Supply with packing box
  3. Red 20 foot LRE Cable
 
Please note that all materials including packing supplies must be returned at the end of the term.

User Provided Parts
  1. Computer with Ethernet Card
  2. CAT5 Ethernet Patch Cable with RJ-45 connectors
  3. Red 20 foot LRE Cable


If you need help installing an Ethernet Card or Cable, please call the University Computer Help Desk at 438-HELP(8-4357).

Ethernet Cards and Cables are available to order at the TechZone, located in the Bone Student Center.

Verify Contents

  1. Make sure all parts on the part list are included in the LRE Installation Kit. If anything is missing, please call 438-8334, email resnet@ilstu.edu, or bring the LRE Installation Kit to the TechZone as soon as possible.

Connect to Wall

  1. Plug the Red LRE Cable into the base of the phone jack mounted on the wall.

Connect to Modem

  1. Place the LRE Modem near one computer in the room.
  2. Run the Red LRE Cable from the phone jack to the connection port in the back of the LRE Modem.

Connect Computers

  1. Plug the power supply into the power outlet and LRE Modem.
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Check for "Ready" light
  4. Connect CAT5 Ethernet Patch Cable into an available port on the back of the LRE Modem.
  5. Connect CAT5 Ethernet Patch Cable into Ethernet Card port on the back of the computer.

Network Setup

  1. Start the computer and open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.)
  2. If you are using Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options... -> Connections -> LAN Settings
  3. Be sure Automatically Detect Settings is checked [uncheck any others] and click OK twice.
  4. Close and reopen your web browser.
  5. Fill out the Residence Hall Network Access Registration Form
